Saga Beach

Saga Beach a well developed stretch of sand lies about 5 km northwest of Bujumbura. It is one of the best inland beaches in the continent. It lies on the coast of Lake Tanganyika. The sand is white and powdery, and the waves refreshing.

It was initially known as Plage des Cocotiers (Coconut Beach) but now with the Saga Beach resort nearby locals refer to it as Saga Beach.  There are various restaurants and a brilliant beach front.  It draws lots of people in the weekend.

Rusizi National Park

Is north-west of Bujumbura next to the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a strip of flood-plain on the east bank of the Rusizi river and the delta as it enters Lake Tanganyika. Species of water birds found here are Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus, Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor and White-faced Whistling-Duck Dendrocygna viduata. Other key species are White-winged Tern Chlidonias leucopterus and African Skimmer Rynchops flavirostris.

 

Ruvubu National Park

North-east of Burundi lies Ruvubu National Park. It extends south from the Tanzanian border along a 65 km stretch of the Ruvubu river. There are over 200 species recorded here, they include the Red-faced Barbet Lybius rubrifacies, Papyrus Yellow Warbler Chloropeta gracilirostris and Papyrus Gonolek Laniarius mufumbiri.

 

Les Tambourinaires

Les Tambourinaires de Burundi: Burundi is known for its drummers and the group les Tambourinaires are a high energy world famous troupe.

 

La Pierre de Livingstone et Stanley

This large rock allegedly marks the spot where the infamous 'Dr Livingstone, I presume?' encounter between Livingstone and Stanley took place on 25 November 1871 however Ujiji in Tanzania has more claim to being the location of this event, hardly any tourists can be found here.

 

Rwihinda Lake Managed Nature Reserve

This lies upstream of the Akanyuru wetlands, north of a town called Kirundo that is close to the Rwandan border.  This area has breeding waterbirds such as African Darter Anhinga rufa, Black Egret Egretta ardesiaca and Black-headed Heron Ardea melanocephala.  The populations were high in the past but this has reduced due to the decreasing water levels as a result of fishing and agriculture. Other key species found here are Papyrus Yellow Warbler Chloropeta gracilirostris and Papyrus Gonolek Laniarius mufumbiri.

 

Kibira National Park

This is a large park next to the Nyungwe forest extending from the Rwandan border to the far south in Muramvya. The forest holds many of the Albertine Rift endemic species and is an important site in Burundi for the conservation of montane forest birds. Species here include Red-collared Babbler Kupeornis rufocinctus, Grauer’s Swamp-Warbler Bradypterus graueri and Shelley’s Crimsonwing Cryptospiza shelleyi.

 

Rusizi National Park

It is 15 km from Bujumbura and is popular among visitors to Bujumbura.  It is in a wetland and is home to a variety of birds, hippos and sitatungas. Sitatungas are aquatic antelopes

 

Fishing in Burundi
