Ethiopia has a medieval feel about it. It’s known for its rich culture, women dressed in white, sovereign history and Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The lines between present and past are quite blurry as traditions from centuries past are still practiced.  Ethiopia has a wide range of treasures from an eclectic rich history, dramatic landscapes and Mountain Nyala and the semien fox that are only found in Ethiopia.

You can enjoy great trekking and an astounding range of flora and fauna between the Simiens Mountains National Park and Bale Mountains.  The Danakil depression is enchanting though a harsh environment offering great adventure. The southwest of Ethiopia offers has some of the most interesting tribes in Africa.

Ethiopia has sunshine right through the year.. A visit to Ethiopia should be determined by the activities you wan to be involved in.  The months of February to November are the best time to visit Bale mountains.

Capital City

The capital city of Ethiopia is Addis Abeba.  A city that has a sense of mystery city and tradition about it.
A couple of interesting attractions include the St George’s cathedral in the middle of the city is magnificent. Other attractions are the Menelk Mousolem and the Central Market.

Attractions

A fascinating range of experience makes Ethiopia a must go land of discovery and and mystery. Ethiopia has numerous attractions.  It has the worlds only Mountain Nyala and Semien Foxes.  It is one of the few country's where rodents play a big part in its wild life and habitat contributing both as food as well as digging up soil making it fertile for vegetation. The Bale Mountains National Park is the continents Afro-Alpine habitat and the country boasts of a wide range of birds and spectacular mountain gorges, hot springs and very breathtaking views.The Simien Mountains has marvelous sites and its fascinating to be around for the rituals of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church which bring the old testament alive. A visit to the limestone caves of sof omar make a visit to to Ethiopia complete.

Ethiopia has a number of of interesting ancient towns in the north like Axum.  The ancient capital, that is known for its granite obelisks and the church which claims to host the Ark of the covenant. Also in the north, is a range of breath taking parks and spectacular water falls ; the Blue Nile water falls. The eight wonder of the world Lalibela, the eighth wonder of the world, attracts many travelers and is considered its main attraction with its eleven remarkable rock-hewn churches.

The fascinating city of Gondar is set in numerous medieval castle-like palaces.  It is called the Camelot of Africa, while the the ancient Walled City of Harar, which was for many centuries a major commercial center, is said to be one of the most scenic in the world. It has unique housing and the locals dress in colorful dress.

The People

Most Ethiopians are Orthodox Christians.  There is a strong element of Judaism in the Ethiopian Orthodox church and its only Orthodox  Ethiopian Christians that have over 150 different festivals to celebrate annually. Some of the interesting tribes are the Hammer of the Omo valley, the Tsemai, Ari and Karo that share the same traditions.

Most famous Ethiopian foods is Injera  a large white bread that is served with we’t; which is a hot sauce made with meat or vegetables.  There is also an interesting variety of local beer and and red and white wine.

The Weather

The country has a good percentage of desert country and can be hot and difficult. The middle of the country is vast high land with  volcanic rock while fascinating deserts surrounds it.  The climate is harsh however a trip to this country is out of this world.

Traveling

One can get their passport at the airport and passes to the parks are got at the park gate. Ethiopia is a difficult country however it provides some of the most breathtaking experiences one could have.  In the parks like Bale Mountain you have to walk or trek to enjoy the beauty and see the attractions.  Certain places you can do a horse trek.

Shopping

This is mainly done in the markets.  The central market is a good place to shop for most groceries.

What to bring

Light clothing and warm clothing is both essential.  The days are hot but the nights are quite cool.  Those planning to trek should also have sturdy but comfortable shoes. Lots of sunscreen and a book on endemic species of Ethiopia will help you enjoy the experience.  A good camera should not be forgotten as you will get lots of opportunities take amazing pictures.
