Mabamba Swamp

Famous spot for the Shoe bill stork. Located 30 km’s west of Kampala Opposite Mpanga Forest. Public transport is available from Kampala New Taxi Park up to Kasanji. A bodaboda will get you to the spot which is 13.5 kms away from Kisanji.

 

Imperial Beaches

Here are 2 beaches manned by 2 hotels Imperial Resort Beach and Imperial Botanical Beach. There is a botanical garden with many rare birds, exotic trees and plants. Both beaches are excellent for sunbathing and water sport activities.

 

Lutembe Beach

This is not a resort beach and access is free.  You can camp and watch the White-winged Terns that are under conservation here.  It a place of particular interest for all bird watching enthusiasts.

 

Nabinonya Beach

This beautiful beach is a favorite for families and has a campsite. A great place to see how Ugandans socialize. Numerous cold drink and snack kiosks, are available and the price is friendly.

 

Budongo Forest

Her you are likely to see Kaniyo Pabidi-Purvels IIIdopsis, Shinning blue kingfisher, White crested Turaco.

 

Kampala and its environs

Being on the shores of Lake Victoria, Kampala’s well wooded outskirts are habitat to a variety of birds.  It provides your best chance of viewing the Bat Hawk and African Hobby. On the highway towards Uganda, is Mabira Forest. One needs between 1-2 days to properly explore this forest. It is habitat to some bid species you may not see anywhere else in the country. Birds here include the Superb Sunbirds, Blue Throated Brown, Green Throated and Forest Robin, Joyful Greenbul, Leaflove, Squared-tailed Drongo, Nahan’s Francolin, Forest Wood-hoopoe, Pied Hornbill, Grey long-bill, Tit- Hylia, Capuchin Babbler, Sooty Boubou, Green tailed Bristlebill, Cassin’s Hawk Eagle and Weyn’s Weaver.

The Botanical Gardens at Entebbe and close to Kampala are habitat to the Great Blue and Ross’s Turacos, Klaa’s, Dieerik Cuckoos, Woodland Kingfisher, Black and white Casqued Hornbill, African and Fish Eagle.

At Mpanga Forest which is approximately 37km frm the roundabout in Natete along Masaka Road you will be able to see a number of forest birds.

 

Kalangala Beach

Situated on Bugala Island which is the largest of the Ssese Islands it is southwest of Entebbe .   The island has tropical forest and and is a great tropical hideaway. You can access the Island y ferry from Bukakata.  There is hotel accommodation on the Island.

 

Munyonyo Beach

From here you can also hire a speedboat or a canoe, ride a horse, play some paint ball, or go fishing. One can also go on a trip to the islands Bullago and Chimp. The beach is maintained by Munyonyo Beach resort and is open to the public.

 

Serena Resort Beach

This beach is only for hotel guests at the Kigo District, 15 km from Kampala.  It is part of the Lake Victoria Serena Resort, here you can play golf or dock a private boat.

 

Bwindi Impenetrable National park:

This is one of the richest flora and fauna forests of East Africa.It has over 357 bird species.See the Albertine rift Endemics,Arhcer’s Robin chat,Kive gorund thrush,Collared apalis,yellow-eyed black flycatcher,rwenzori batis and strange weaver, Buhoma- Ruhinja Black Bee eater, African Green Broadbill

 

Kibale National Park

While this is a primatologist’s dream and harbors in the largest sum of primates found anywhere in East Africa, it also has a good variety of bird species. 70% of the park is forest area the rest being a mixture of grassland, swamps and plantations of exotic cinfires. Birds recorded here include Red-winged Francolin, Red-chested Flufftail, White-naped pigeon, Green-breasted Pitta, Africa Pitta, Joyful Greenbul, Grey throated Flycatcher. White-bellied Crested Flycatcher, Masked and Black-capped Apalises, Uganda Woodland Warbler, Chestnut-winged Starling, Oranger-tufted ad tiny Sunbirds, Grey-headed Olive-back.

The best forest birding is from the Kanyanchu visitor Center to the bridge ad there is an observation tower at Bigodi Sanctuary.
